What is Havening Techniques® and why is it
so powerful for trauma and triggers?

What is Havening?


Havening Techniques® is a neuroscience-based method that uses gentle touch and calming mental focus to help the brain release the emotional charge of past traumatic experiences

 

By calming the amygdala and disrupting the neural pathways that maintain distress, Havening transforms how painful memories are stored in the brain and creates permanent relief from the emotional grip of past events.

This makes it especially effective for resolving deep-seated triggers and relational trauma, where the body often reacts before the mind can process what’s happening.

 

Havening doesn’t just manage symptoms - it eliminates the root cause of emotional pain, freeing you to approach relationships and life with greater ease and authenticity.

What Does a One-on-One Havening Session With Me Look Like?

A session with me always starts by taking a few moments to land together - to pause, arrive, and create a safe, held space. Then we gently open the conversation to what’s really going on for you: what you’re struggling with, what feels stuck or upsetting, and where you want to see change.

Rather than just treating the symptom, we look beneath it to understand what this is really about.

Often, our patterns today are deeply shaped by how we respond to life now - and those responses are influenced by early experiences that wired our nervous system in a particular way.

We then explore which past event might have created that pattern. Emotional pain and trauma can become stored in the amygdala, a part of the brain that’s constantly scanning your current life for anything that looks like something from the past. When there’s a match - even if the threat isn’t real anymore - your nervous system goes on alert. That’s why you can feel triggered in the present, even if intellectually you “know better.”

Because you can’t simply think your way out of that response, we work in Havening with techniques that directly address how your brain and nervous system are wired. Once we’ve identified the present-day trigger and the memory behind it, we gently reconnect with that memory - not to relive it fully, but just enough to feel the emotional echo.

Then, we apply a sequence of Havening techniques: soothing, gentle touches you make on your arms, face, or hands, paired with specific distraction exercises (counting, humming, visual imagery, stepping through “mental stairs,” or recalling neutral details).

These distraction techniques are not random - they engage your working memory just enough so that your brain can’t fully reinforce the emotional intensity of the memory. Combined with the touch, this creates a kind of “unhooking” in the amygdala, helping your brain release the emotional charge. As we do this, I guide you through each step, supporting your nervous system to shift from hyper-alert back into calm.

Towards the end of the session, we often install more resourceful, positive emotional states. This helps your system feel grounded, safe, and empowered - not just in the moment, but going forward, as you face life with renewed resilience and freedom.
